This page is up to date for game version 5.032 and is likely out of date.

Every ship in the game has an Armor Type that is what its structural hull is made from.
Most military ships get Bonus Damage against 3 or 4 Armor Types.
In-game when looking at the ship description pop-up, the Armor Type at the end of the second white line as "Hull: Light" for the light Armor Type.
The Bonus Damage is on its own green line as "Attack Multiplyer: Close-Combat 2.4 Medium 2.4 Polycrystal 5" for 2.4x Bonus Damage against Clost-Combat and Medium type armor and 5x damage against Polycrystal type.

Note that Bonus Damage is not tied to the type of ammunition a ship fires, however a ship can be immune to a certain shot type as described in the Ammunition Types and Immunitues page.
How damage is calculated can be found on the Armor page.

The following Armor Types currently exist:
Artillery
Close-Combat
Command-Grade
Composite
Heavy
Light
Medium
Neutron
Polycrystal See note.
Refractive
Scout
Structural
Swarmer
Turret
Ultra-Heavy
Ultra-Light

The Polycrystal armor type deserves a special mention as it is the 'Bomber' armor type. A common defensive structure, the Fortress, has a significant damage penalty against this hull type so it is recommended that a strike force attacking a Fortress have as many polycrystal ships to reduce losses.
