Why the uncertainty?  Well, we get a lot of idea submissions from our community, and new things occur to us all the time, too.  When it starts time to actually work on the fourth expansion, we're going to sit down and look at all the features suggested, and decide on what makes the most sense based on the time available, what people are most interested in at the time, and how the game has evolved through the free DLC between now and then.

Overall, this expansion is committed to doing things a bit differently.  Each of the three preceding expansions followed a similar pattern with a focus on a single alien race, while the fourth expansion -- Ancient Shadows -- is instead focusing on its marquee feature and then a somewhat smaller mix of "the usual suspects" in terms of added content.

In general, the fourth expansion is expected to have a similar amount of content to the first and third expansions, if not more.  And community involvement will be a key thing with it, same as it was for all the others, of course.

When will the fourth expansion for AI War be coming out?

A: The latest release schedule for all Arcen products can always be found on the left sidebar of the main Arcen site, under the Release Schedule section. At present is it slated for October 2012.

The content of the fourth expansion has not been announced yet, but work has commenced on it and a lot of the ideas were drawn from longstanding submissions to the mantis idea tracker. At least the baseline of its as-yet-unannounced marquee feature is expected to be available as soon as the expansion hits its public beta phase (contrary to older expansions which typically launched their beta with just a bonus ship type).

In general, the fourth expansion is expected to have a similar amount of impact on the game that the first and third expansions did, if not more. However, in terms of raw content it is expected to be a bit smaller than them mainly because it is starting at half the price point that they originally started at ($4.99 instead of $9.99).
