The AI had been using this structure to eavesdrop on long range Spire communications prior to their invasion of the Spire's galaxy. Hacking this beacon will allow you to detect Spire signals as well.
Doing this hack will allow you to start finding Spire Relics and transition to open warfare against the AI. Actual gameplay will not be changed until you rescue the first Spire Relic.
