Every ship in the game has an Hull Type that is what its structural hull is made from.
Most military ships get an attack multiplier against 3 or 4 Hull Types. Ships that get no hull bonuses tend to have higher base damage.
In-game when looking at the ship description pop-up, the Hull Type at the end of the second white line as, for example, "Hull: Light".
Note that Attack Multipliers are not tied to the type of ammunition a ship fires, although a ship can be immune to a certain shot type as described in the Ship Immunities page.

The following are all the Hull Types in v. 7.009, along with some examples of ships possessing that hull:
- Artillery
- Plasma Siege Starships
- Missile Frigates
- Four bonus fleet ships, three of them long ranged
- Close-Combat
- Six bonus fleet ships, including two melee and two explode-on-impact
- Command-Grade - Bombers and Bomber Drones are the only ordinary ships that get a damage bonus against this hull type
- Composite
- Warheads of all kinds
- Six bonus fleet ships
- Heavy
- Many starships including Flagships, Leech, Riot Control, and Neinzul Enclave Starships
- All Spirecraft except Implosion Artillery and Shield Bearers
- Hybrid Hives (under their shield modules)
- Dyson Gatlings
- Four bonus ships
- Light
- Fighters
- Five bonus fleet ships, including three with bonuses against Polycrystal hulls
- Medium
- 16 of the 26 guardians
- 8 of the 15 dire guardians
- Tachyon Sentinels
- Spire Starships
- Twelve bonus ships
- Neutron
- Zenith Starships
- Engineers, Remains Rebuilders and Cleanup Drones
- Five bonus fleet ships, including four introduced in The Zenith Remnant
- Polycrystal - As of v. 5.032, Fortresses get a 0.01x damage penalty against this hull type, so it is recommended that a strike force attacking a Fortress consist only of ships with polycrystal hulls.

- Four bonus ships, all with bonuses against Heavy and Ultra-heavy hulls
- Refractive
- Cloaker Starships
- Mines of all kinds
- Six bonus fleet ships, including four with cloaking and two that boost nearby ships

- High-priority immobile targets including Raid Engines and Alarm Posts

- Turrets of all kinds, including Tractor Beam, Gravitational, Counter Sniper, and Counter Missile
