Metal Harvesters are automatically built when a planet is captured and rebuilt when no enemy ships are present, but they can be manually built with the ECON tab of the Command Station menu. They require Supply to work. Guard Posts usually block metal deposits and must be destroyed first (however guard posts are rarely let alive on friendly planets).
The MkI harvesters produce 20 metal per second each. They can be upgraded to MkII for 4,000 Knowledge to produce 30 m/s, then to MkIII for 5,000 to produce 55 m/s. The upgrades are instantaneous and cost nothing more than knowledge (no metal reinvested, no construction delay, etc).
The Harvester Exo-Field can be researched to protect them.
