How to use in your fleet
Dyson gatlings cannot be controlled by the player. The Dyson sphere begins the game on an AI planet and spawns gatlings that are hostile to both the player and AI (purple border). If the command center in this planet is destroyed, the sphere will switch to spawning player-allied gatlings (yellow border). Thematically, the Dyson sphere recognises the player's benign intent.
An ally dyson gatling will enter and patrol your worlds against hostile incursions if there is a neighbouring player-controlled planet. Therefore, to utilise this benefit connect your worlds to the dyson-sphere's planet, without building a command center at the dyson's planet itself. Doing so will antagonise the sphere, which will start spawning hostile gatlings (red border) to eliminate the player until the command center is destroyed.
Once spawned, dyson gatlings will not change their mission. There is therefore no point in waiting for purple or red gatling to convert.
How to counter when in the AI fleet
Fortunately, the AI does not build dyson gatlings. However, it is possible for the Dyson Sphere to be antagonized in certain conditions. In this case, the player should prepare seriously heavy defenses and not allow a lethal build-up of hostile gatings.
